Five principles of Usui Reiki

The Five Principles of Usui Reiki, also known as the Gokai, are spiritual guidelines introduced by Mikao Usui to help people live with greater peace, clarity, and compassion. They’re meant to be recited daily—especially in the morning and evening—as a way to align with Reiki energy and cultivate mindfulness.

Here’s how they’re traditionally expressed:

1. Just for today, do not be angry (Ikaruna)

   – Let go of resentment and allow calm to take its place.

2. Just for today, do not worry (Shinpai suna)

   – Release anxiety and trust in the present moment.

3. Just for today, be grateful(Kansha shite)

   – Appreciate what you have and nurture a heart of thankfulness.

4. Just for today, work diligently (Gō o hagemi)

   – Be honest and committed in your actions and responsibilities.

5. Just for today, be kind to others (Hito ni shinsetsu ni)

   – Practice compassion and treat all beings with respect.

Usui encouraged practitioners to sit in the Gassho position (hands together in prayer) while repeating these principles aloud and in their hearts. They’re not rigid rules, but gentle reminders to live with intention and integrity.
